[:en]From Wednesday the 28th of August, around Casa Professa, there will be books available to take and read for free as part of the street library project being a bookcrossing zone under the care of the Human Rights Youth Organization in cooperation with the Arci circle – Porco Rosso.

Street library is a project by the volunteers from HRYO to the people of Palermo. This library is a beautiful spot for released books. The purpose of the project is to spread the idea of book exchange (bookcrossing) through Palermo. Bookcrossing is defined as “the practice of leaving books in a public places to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.” The term is derived from bookcrossing.com, a free online book club which was founded to encourage the practice, aiming to “make the whole world a library.”

The “crossing” or exchanging books may take different forms, including wild-releasing books in public, direct swaps with other members of the websites, or “book rings” in which books travel in a set order to participants who want to read a certain book.

Street Libraries are a window into the mind of a community; books come and go. People can simply reach in and take what interests them; when they are done, they can return them to the Street Library.

HRYO spot is located in Arci Porco Rosso around piazza Casa Professa. If anyone has a book that they think others would enjoy, they can just pop it into the shelf of the Street Library. If you are one of those people who wants to read, this is the thing for you, so enjoy.

The HRYO – Human Rights Youth Organization is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in Palermo in 2009 with the aim to strengthen the human rights at a local and global level. The organization works with international volounteers and provide educational and awareness-building project for local children, youth and young adults.

Organization is placed in Stato Brado, piazzetta di Resuttano 4 – it’s where you can leave books and take part in the activities of organizations such as English Language Cafe.
